Just one hundred years ago, in 1923, we humans were beginning to use radio broadcasting for news, music, and entertainment. The first commercial passenger air service took flight, long-distance calling was slowly coming into the hands of ordinary working-class people and more and more houses were getting access to round-the-clock electricity. It is now 2023, a full century has gone by and we are now in the era of ChatGPT. It is not just a leap for humanity, it is indeed more, it is a big turn of the dial for all of mankind.
How do you explain ChatGPT to someone who has never heard about it?
Here are a few ways to get your attention:
Imagine shouting into a cave, and the echo you hear includes the voice of every human who has ever uttered a word…
Or how about this:
Imagine you have a friend who has read everything published on the public world wide web and remembers every bit of it…and the friend does not mind sharing the knowledge with you.
okay last one, and this one in the words of ChatGPT itself:
ChatGPT is like a language genie that can grant your wish for information, without requiring you to rub a lamp or make any awkward small talk.
Now, how about that?
Let us take a moment here and try to digest this information. What this basically means is this – We now have access to unlimited information at our fingertips. Considering the depth and breadth of information of ChatGPT, it is not entirely inaccurate to say that this information is unlimited!
Isn’t this magic? It is more than just magic, it is the culmination of mankind’s progress as a sentient being in this universe. It is everything that has ever been progressed, focused into a specific engineering problem. We now have it – the power of the entire world in the palm of our hands!
And what’s more? It is free of cost to use!
In this blog, I explore and share some ideas to use ChatGPT. How to get started, example prompts and example responses, you will find some resources here. Whatever walk of life you may be from, you can certainly use ChatGPT to your advantage. Yes, I am certain of it.
With ChatGPT becoming so widely used, a new portal has opened for mankind. Nothing will ever be the same again. Not the way we write, not the way we study and educate ourselves, not anything. There will be nothing that is going to be left untouched by AI. Every facet of our everyday life is about to be influenced by AI.
Precisely how it is going to turn, and when, remains to be seen. And one can only speculate what the future holds for us. But one thing is for sure, we are fast approaching a new event horizon. A paradigm shift in the way we conduct ourselves and process thoughts is looming not so far in time. We can expect drastic changes in the very near future. So, instead of wondering what the future holds for us, why not get a taste of it today?
So let’s get started. I am going to begin by sharing the basic context of ChatGPT in layman’s terms and then I will let you know how you can get started using it.
What’s ChatGPT?
But first, let us get one thing out of the way. You will likely come across the term ‘AI’ a lot. So, what the hell is AI? Very briefly speaking, AI is:
AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is like having a super-smart robot brain that can think and learn like a human, but can process information and make decisions much faster than we can. It’s a way of building computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as recognizing images, understanding natural language, and solving complex problems. AI is already being used in a wide range of applications, from virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa to self-driving cars and medical diagnosis systems. With AI, we can automate tasks, improve decision-making, and achieve things that would be impossible with human intelligence alone.
Very well, so what is ChatGPT?
As an AI language model, ChatGPT is a tool that can help you communicate with computers using natural language. It is trained to understand and respond to a wide range of questions and statements, making it a useful resource for tasks like finding information, solving problems, or even just having a conversation.
Some examples of how you might use ChatGPT in your daily life include:
- Asking a virtual assistant to set a reminder for an upcoming appointment
- Searching for information on a particular topic using natural language queries
- Getting help troubleshooting a technical issue by asking ChatGPT for assistance
- Engaging in a chatbot conversation for customer service or support purposes
A quick demo. From my own recent personal experience, I wished to put up a listing of my house for a sublease. Being lazy, I had the idea of asking ChatGPT to write a listing for me. So, here is how it went.

Naturally, the response was adequate and did the job perfectly. But I felt that the listing was too long and would not grab the attention of people scrolling through Facebook, which is where I intended to post the listing.
So, I had another idea. How about I ask it to write the same listing in the style of Ernest Hemingway? (Because, who else comes to mind when you think about short and to-the-point writing?). And here is how it went…(being a reader of Hemingway’s works, I was genuinely blown away by the AI’s response…)

This should hopefully give you a taste of the capabilities of this system. Just for the sake of my demo, and also because I was bored, I asked the AI to write the same listing in the style of J.R.R Tolkein (Best known for Lord of the Rings trilogy) and the response was hilariously accurate.

Isn’t this fascinating? Doesnt this fire your imagination and get you excited? What a time to be alive!
Who created this…umm, being?
ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research organization founded in 2015. OpenAI’s mission is to create advanced AI technologies in a safe and beneficial way, with the goal of ensuring that these technologies benefit humanity as a whole.
The development of ChatGPT was part of OpenAI’s efforts to create more sophisticated language models that can understand and respond to natural language queries in a more human-like way. ChatGPT is based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture, which is a type of deep neural network that has been pre-trained on massive amounts of data.
The first version of GPT was released in 2018, and subsequent versions, including GPT-2 and GPT-3, have continued to improve the model’s ability to generate high-quality and human-like text. ChatGPT is a variation of GPT-3 that has been specifically designed for conversational applications, such as chatbots and virtual assistants. It uses a combination of machine learning algorithms and natural language processing techniques to understand and respond to user queries in a way that feels natural and intuitive.
How do I get started?
To get started, all you need to do is create your OpenAI account. And that is it! The power of the world, just a click away uh?
Once you create the account, you are ready to start chatting with your new all-knowing friend. Head to the chat platform to begin.

At this point, you will need to know a little context about what is known as ‘prompts’. You will use these prompts to communicate with the AI. Regardless of ChatGPT, you are likely to hear the term ‘prompts’ frequently in the coming days. There is a high possibility that writing prompts is going to develop into a profession of its own — Prompt Engineering is already a thing!
What are Prompts?
In the context of natural language processing and machine learning, a prompt is a piece of text that is used to guide or prime a language model to generate a specific type of output.
A prompt can be a word, a phrase, a sentence, or even a paragraph, and it is typically used to initiate a conversation with a language model or to provide it with context for generating a response.
For example, if you wanted to use a language model to generate a news article about a particular topic, you might provide a prompt that includes the key facts or ideas you want the article to cover.
Similarly, if you were using a language model to generate a chatbot response, you might provide a prompt that includes the user’s previous message or a brief summary of the current conversation.
Prompts are an important tool for controlling the output of language models and ensuring that they generate responses that are relevant, accurate, and consistent with the user’s intent.
Here are a few examples of prompts:
- News article prompt: “Write an article about the recent developments in renewable energy technology, focusing on advances in solar power and wind power.”
- Chatbot prompt: “Hi, how can I help you today?” (This prompt is used to initiate a conversation with the user and prompt them to provide more information about their query or problem.)
- Creative writing prompt: “Write a short story about a character who discovers a mysterious object in their backyard and sets out to unravel its secrets.”
- Translation prompt: “Translate the following sentence from English to French: ‘The cat sat on the mat.'”
- Question-answering prompt: “What is the capital of France?” (This prompt is used to prompt the language model to generate a specific piece of information in response to a question.)
As I said, in general, prompts are used to provide a starting point for language generation and help guide the model towards a specific type of output. They can be used in a wide range of applications, from chatbots and virtual assistants to creative writing and scientific research.
